BASIC NETWORK ADMINISTRATION

 BASIC NETWORK ADMINISTRATION

INTRODUCTION OF BASIC NETWORK ADMINISTRATION (TAKING BACK UP, RESTORE, ROUTINE TASK ON SERVER AND OTHER MAINTENANCE WORK AND DEFRAGMENTATION)

Basic network administration is a very important aspect of network management. Every user as
well as network supervisor/administrator must know do’s and don’ts of basic network administration. In absence of this knowledge the network will not function properly and with the time it will become slow and nonresponsive.

Following is the list of some basic routine maintenance work which must be carried out
regularly:-

• Taking Back up –this is one of the most important works which should be carried out regularly at a certain interval. A written record to this effect should be maintained for each computer along with the name of media on which backup is taken. The media on which backup is taken should be properly marked, numbered and sealed and should be kept at a safe ,dumpfree place for future use.

• Creation of restore points –Whenever the computer is functioning in a best state a restore point should be created and entry to this effect should be made in the logbook for future use .whenever knowingly or unknowingly some mis-configuration takes place it should be restored to the previous restore points.

• Regular Disc cleanup –With the passage of time lot of temporary folder gets created which detoriates the performance of the computer and thereby requires disc cleanup wizard to be run at least once in a month. An entry to this effect should also be made in the maintenance register.

• Disc defragmentation –This also one of the most important work which requires to be carried out fortnightly for proper running of the computer. An entry to this effect should also be maintained by the individual user.

• Event Viewer Monitoring –Every computer maintains a log of all the events happening on the node and server. The event viewer gives a very good indication regarding the performance of  the network. Any warning shown should be noticed and remedial measure should be taken to keep the network healthy.

• Updatation – to keep all the computers and servers safe and trouble free it becomes very important to update all the computers by latest patches being issued time to time by the manufacturer of the OS and Antivirus. Updates are always essential to fill up the security holes in the OS as company always keeps on updating these as per latest threats they receive by their regular research. To save the bandwidth and where every computer don’t have a internet connectivity it is advisable to make one computer running window server 2003 /2008 as software update server(SUS) so that all the latest patches are downloaded in SUS and redistributed to all clients without the need of a Internet. In the same manner on e computer should be made Live update server for antivirus updating. (see in practical how to do this)

• Lock the Administrator Account –As a general practice administrator account should be opened only for carrying out some administrative task /setup/ Maintenance (mentioned above) and for no other purpose. Every other user should have a separate user account and password for their day to day activity.

• File maintenance- any measure changes made in the server must be written down along with details so that in future same can be easily traced out. No changes repeat no changes in server should be carried out without writing the same in their maintenance book.
