The understanding of basic concept of server is felt very essential for the understanding of the network technology .here is some basic definition of the basic server type along with their utilization
1. File Server –this is the server which is mainly responsible for management of files in the entire network. Once the file server is installed, the folders as per requirement of the organization are opened with suitable rights. all the clients save their folder in the centralized place only so that whenever any client requires that folder same is accessible from any node. The file server has many more facilities for safeguarding of the data .the data is archived and even if by mistake something is deleted same can be
retrieved.
2. Print Server – this is server which is responsible for management of all printers of the network .once the print server is installed, each printers can be assigned rights as per users requirement. Which user to be given permission on which printers, everything can be configured. This not only utilizes maximum resource but also gives centralized control over all network resources like printers and faxes.
3. Domain Controller – this is the main server of the network and is named Domain Controller due to its role as controller of the network. this server keeps all records of users ,printers ,shared folders ,Organizational units ,computers and any other resource of the network .this server is responsible for examining authentication of the user/computer and once authenticated by the domain controller than only the user is able to utilize any network resources .domain controller manages all these resources with the help of a directory service named Active Directory in windows server 2000/2003/2008.active directory is the central place which keeps details of all resource record in a systematic manner and whenever same is required either by user or by machine same is provided immediately for easy access of the resources.
There are various type of DC machine name d on the basis of their position in the network .understanding of these terminology is very important for the understanding of network.(Window Based).the various type of domain controller are FRDC (Forest root domain controller),CDC (Child domain controller),ADC (Additional domain controller) etc. although all have the same function that of domain controller but the hierarchy in the network decides whether a machine is either CDC or FRDC or what.
1. Mail Server –this is the server which is responsible for holding the mail boxes of each user and delivering the mail to the authorize user of the mail box, whenever they are connected with the mail server. In window server 2003/2008 the simple mail server can be configured based on POP3 and SMTP with the help of operating system itself. However for advanced messaging and web based messaging and other advanced features separate mail messaging software known as “Microsoft Exchange Server” is recommended, which can be loaded on any window server 2003 based machine.
2. Web Server – This is the server which is responsible for providing web based services on the network .this server holds the website with the help of a service known as IIS which comes bundledwith Microsoft Windows Server 2003/2008.one server can Host 100 of web site s should have a static IP address and domain name registered with Service provider. if only one static IP address is available than multiple website can be hosted with the help of Virtual Directory which can be created within IIS and the site will be available as sub domain of main website.
3. DNS Server –a DNS server is a server which is responsible for providing name for IP and vis a vis to the nodes/user to whom it is required and thereby makes fast connectivity between various nodes .the role of DNS becomes more important when various clients require internet connectivity or forhosting of website .the DNS server contains two type of zone which are called forward lookup zone and reverse lookup zone .forward lookup zone is respons zone is responsible for providing name of the computer for IP. So it provides a correlation between the name of the computer and its IP address.
4. DHCP Server –a DHCP server is a server which provides Dynamic IP address to the nodes whenever asked by the nodes. this server plays a very important role in management centralized management of the IP address the conflict of IP address never takes place and the role of this server becomes more important where less number of IP address is available than the total number of nodes .this is a connection less server i.e. once IP is provided to the clients there after no relation exists between the node and the DHCP server.
5. Proxy Server – This is the server which is used to provide a single internet connection to multiple user of the local area network a nodes and DC Machine to be exposed to WAN/Internet .this server acts as proxy server between the ISP and LAN thereby gives total protection of the LAN.
6. Routing and Remote access server(RRAS)
remote access server i.e. it provides authentication to the remote mobile user / computer which is working outside the LAN and want access to the local resources through Internet/WAN .once the remote user is authenticated by providing suitable user name and password they become able to enter inside LAN from outside.
7. Media Server –
8. FTP server – FTP is very old protocol used for large size file transfer. The files which cannot be sent via message can be transferred via FTP.once a server is configured as FTP the same becomes available to the users for the transfer of files.
9. Terminal Server – This is a server which is capable of providing 100 or 200 or more remote desktop simultaneously to all users of the network as per their rights. The window XP Professional /vista has a lower version of terminal service due to which they are capable of giving only one remote desktop at a time. but in case of window server 2003/2008 once configured as Terminal server ,they are
capable of providing multiple desktop at a time. the main benefit of this type of service is less maintenance as we require only one software and same is available to all clients without any extra expenditure .e.g. only one antivirus ,MS Office requires for all clients and it will be available to all without any extra expenditure. This concept is also known as thin client concept.
10. DBM Server – This is the database management software which is running data base management software like Oracle++ etc and is responsible for holding all the database of the organization and same is provided to the clients as per requirements and rights.
11. SMS Server – This is the server which provides SMS service to all users outside the network. To establish a SMS server a GSM modem along with messaging software is required.
Note: - It is worth mentioning here that these entire servers can either be installed on same machine or on different machine in same location or different location is immaterial. It actually depends on load of traffic that a server has to handle in a particular service based on which it requires to be decided that whether the machine will be same or different.
