1. Active Directory – Active directory is a directory service introduced after windows Server 2000.this is basically a directory which keeps record of all computers ,users ,printers ,shared folders ,domain controllers ,sites ,OU or any other resources connected with the network .this is a centralized place where any information required by user or computer is available .it has a inbuilt search engine also with the help of which any resource located in the directory can be easily searched and utilized

.• To install active directory in any machine running window server 2003/2008 or XP Professional go to RUN →type <dcpromo> and a wizard which will guide through various installation process will start. After completion of this wizard active directory will be installed in the computer. After installation of the active directory same can be accessed by going to start →administrative tool →active directory users and computers.

2. Group Policy – group policy inside a Server is a set of rules which once implemented becomes applicable for all clients on which it is implemented. this is the basic tool by which various restrictions/rules are applied on clients.

3. MMC –Microsoft management console is a basic tool by which various task can be executed from a centralized place without going through the various menus for various options .this provides a very convenient way of executing options from a central window.

• MMC can be accessed by typing <mmc> in Run prompt .once the snap in /window appears various tools can be added which are frequently used and same may be saved for future action from the same console .once the console is saved same the rules implemented through mmc is activated.

DHCP - a DHCP server is a server which provides Dynamic IP address to the nodes whenever asked by the nodes. this server plays a very important role in management of IP address due to centralized management of the IP address the conflict of IP address never takes place and the role of this server becomes more important where less number of IP address is available than the total number of nodes .this is a connection less server i.e. once IP is provided to the clients there after no relation exists between the node and the DHCP server.

IIS – This is called internet information service .this is a service of the window with the help of which website, FTP server, SMTP server runs .once IIS is installed in the server, the server can host 10-0 of site without any problem .this service can be installed by going to control panel →add or remove program →add windows component →IIS and click OK two times the IIS will be installed.

Distributed File System – DFS is a service of window server 2003 /2008 and is subcomponent of file server. It is a service in which multiple files which are distributed all over the network and situated on various client are configured in such a ,manner that a user who will access DFS folder will feel that all folder are subfolder of the DFS folder. Due to this service accessing a file which is situated on various computers become very easy. So in brief we can say that by DFS various folder which are situated on various computer becomes accessible from one place.

Disk Management – disk management is a part of computer management console of server with the help of which each computers hard disc is accessible from desktop of server and all regular maintenance task of disk management like disk defragmentation, removal of temporary folder, disk quota allotment can be carried out from the desktop of the server.

There are a few different ways to access Disk Management.

• Method 1 - Start > Control Panel > Performance and Maintenance > Administrative Tools. Double click Computer Management and then click Disk Management in the left hand column.

• Method 2 - By default, Administrative Tools is not shown on the Start Menu but if you have modified the Start Menu (by right clicking the Start button and selecting Properties > Customize) so it is shown then just select Start > Administrative Tools > Computer Management

and then click Disk Management in the left hand column.

• Method 3 - Click Start > run and type diskmgmt.msc in the Open: line and click OK. The Disk Management snap-in will open.

Printer Management – with the help of printer management, various rights on the printer is given from the desktop of the server. It includes giving rights on printers to various users. Priority printing on the printer that means which user will be given preference while order of printing has been given by two users etc is carried out.

File system management – file management includes deciding disk quota to various files, archiving

of the folders, backup planning of the files and deciding their schedule, deciding rights of the user on

various file and folder etc.

Share Point Services (SPS) –Share Point services is the very useful web based service of the Microsoft which provide web based access to all resources of the server. Once share point service is installed on the server it launches a web site known as share point site which includes file, folder, video, instant messaging, discussion board, mail service, daily announcement etc all from the comfort of web browser thereby makes all the services easily accessible through web. The other good feature of share point service is participation of all users under which each user can be given rights to contribute their folder with the website and thereby all user who has a right to contribute can share their folder on the web and can make this site more useful..

Software Update Service – (SUS) this service is provided by the Microsoft to keep up-to-date the entire computer in the LAN without connecting to the internet and their by saving bandwidth in downloading the same patch of OS again and again for each computer. A web site known as SUS is hosted by one of the computer which runs either window server 2003 or XP Professional inside the Local network and this computer is connected with the internet .this site keeps on downloading all the latest patches provided by Microsoft and their after all clients connects to this SUS site only to download the latest patch on regular intervals .this not only keeps all the computer up-to-date but also saves lot of bandwidth of the net.

MOM - MOM 2005 is an event and performance management tool for Windows Server System. MOM 2005 improves the manageability of infrastructure by providing Comprehensive event management, Proactive monitoring and alerting, Reporting and trend analysis, System and application-specific knowledge from the experts all from a web based interface thereby keeps our network healthy and trouble free

Volume Shadow Copy – This service is also known as VSS and is useful for recovery of file which has been deleted by mistake. It allows taking manual or automatic backup copies or snapshots of a file or folder on a specific volume at a specific point in time. Shadow copies can be used for a number of purposes such as Creating consistent backups of open files and applications, Creating shadow copies for shared folders , Creating transportable shadow copies using a hardware provider — for backup, testing and data mining scenarios , Quickly recovering and restoring files and data.
